Meet Stanley.
Stanley was brought to our attention at the county west shelter with an injured front leg that he is unable to bear weight on.
When we met Stanley, it quickly became apparent that this injury does not slow him down. While it’s true that Stanley cannot place any weight on his right front leg, he still manages to be a happy, mobile, friendly little guy!
It never ceases to amaze us how resilient these animals are and how they bravely put on a smile in the face of illness or injury!
Stanley has had a full vet evaluation, including Xrays. His Valley Fever titer is elevated and he will be started on Fluconazole.
Our partner vet will be consulting with an orthopedic surgeon to determine the best treatment plan for Stanley’s leg. At this time, we are unsure if the injury is an old one or if we will be able to save the leg.
For now, Stanley is safe and cared for in a wonderful foster home and is being kept comfortable with pain medication.
We can only continue to help animals in need with your ongoing support. Please, if you are able, donate to Stanley’s medical care chip in fund via Paypal at the link below. Thank You!
Stanley’s Updates:
Friends, once again our hearts are broken. Stanley passed away unexpectedly during the night in his foster home. We are grateful for the love and care he received during his too short time with us.
Update July 4th: Friends, once again our hearts are broken… Stanley came to us in May. Microchipped, but his prior owners never registered the chip. So Stanley sat and waited… and waited, but nobody came for him. When this sweet senior found himself on the e list for a bum leg, one of our volunteers went down to meet him; we couldn’t let him die. He was dirty and stinky and matted but full of love for everyone he met. After a visit to our vet, x-rays and bloodwork revealed that Stanley had Valley Fever. He was started on medication and went to one of our amazing foster homes to begin his recovery. Stanley had good and bad days health-wise, but every day was filled with love. Two nights ago Stanley passed away unexpectedly. It was a shock to the entire M.A.I.N. family. A necropsy revealed what we feared – Stanley also had cancer. There was nothing medically that we could have done. We choose to remember the good days! Stanley spent his last days loved and spoiled and we are happy that he was part of our family, even though his time with us was much too short. Run free Stanley.
Update from Stanley’s foster mom, June 8th: The vet did Xrays of both Stanley’s hips on Friday because of his walk and lack of muscle tone. The right hip which we were worried about is normal. The left hip they were unable to see sharp boarders. She felt it may be Valley Fever or cellulitis because he is in so much pain he walks that way to avoid any touching of the leg. He is aware of his foot and feels pain if you press on it. His temp was normal finally. He can now hold himself up for longer time periods, for example he can eat sitting and standing up now. For the first week he could not stand up that long. I am feeding him three times a day trying for high protein. He will eat everything you give him. He also is able to lay down easier. For the first week he could barely hold his head up, so we are making progress slow but sure.Â
Update on Stanley, June 5th: Stanley’s xrays were negative and the vets think the the swelling in his leg could be VF related and/or a cellulitis (skin infection). He is currently being treated for both and kept comfortable with pain medicine when needed. As of now, Stanley does not use his right front leg.
From Stanley’s foster mom, May 31st: Stanley is doing well it seems. Very tired, but eating well and drinking well. He went in and out the doggie door today for the first time.
