Meet Penny.
Penny was rescued from the county euthanasia list with multiple fatty spots, likely lipomas and a suspected mammary tumor.
Update, Oct. 9th: Not a great day… The news is not good for Penny. The worst tumors were aspirated and examined. They are mast cell tumors and they are cancerous. Read More
Dr. K & Dr. M both looked into possible chemo as a plan of attack but with research decided against that route. Even if we able to raise the funds for treatment, the tumors are so widespread (she has many) that the prognosis with chemo is really no better than without.
The plan for Penny is this – she is young, maybe 2, and right now she is happy and healthy besides the tumors. We are going to remove the big pendulous tumor and the large ruptured mast cell tumors. She will get more – that’s unfortunately how it works. We will leave the future tumors alone and will provide palliative care – likely prednisone and antihistamines – and let her live out her time here on earth.
We are not sure how long she has – that depends on if the tumors are localized to the subcutaneous areas or if there is metastasis to the lymph nodes or organs. We agree with our vets that there is no reason to euthanize Penny as she is so full of life. We will let her live out whatever time she has here on this earth. She will tell us when it’s time; when her quality of life is slipping then we will make the hardest decision of all, to let her go.
Penny’s Updates:
Penny is doing well in her hospice foster/furever home, which includes M.A.I.N. dog, Maggie. This girl is a real joy- curious, spunky, loving and full of life!

Update from Penny’s foster mom, July 10th: Penny stopped moaning around 10:30 last night. She got up and walked outside to use the bathroom at two. She is three- wheeling it right now. Slept from 2:30 to 5:30. She ate a little breakfast. Now she’s laying on her bed resting.

Update on Penny, May 6th: Penny is still doing great and loving life in her foster home with MAIN alumni sister, Maggie!
Update on Penny, Jan. 18th: Penny is doing amazing. She loves playing and walking. She is still building muscle, which is encouraging to us. Her tumors are getting bigger, but not having any complications yet.
From Penny’s foster mom, Jan. 9th: Penny told us last night that she had a problem. We of course were concerned and wanted to know what was wrong. Well she proceeded to tell us that her fur coat was broken. That even with her pretty sweater she was still cold on her morning walks. So I went and got her a winter coat this morning. Maggie just laughed, telling us her coat works just fine.
From Penny’s foster mom, Beccie: Penny did great on her first night with us! She likes dog beds and goes to the back door for potty time. We walked about a mile this morning with no problems. She ate all of her breakfast, and took her pills- of course the scoop of peanut butter helped the medicine go down.
Penny stopped by for a photo shoot at Don’s house in February. We got some great shots of her…it’s obvious she loves her foster mom and sister, Maggie!
