Nigel

Sweet boy Nigel recently went to the vet for what we hoped would be his final checkup; and it was! Woo-Hoo for this guy. Nigel has lost that muzzle and is ready for a bath and some grooming. He is doing great although still taking it easy. He’s in a foster-to-adopt home, and we couldn’t be happier with the family he has chosen as his very own. He’s getting loved, snuggled, and spoiled; as it should be. He’s also been named Rocky Nigel because he’s such a fighter.

Original Post: Until a few days ago, this cute boy was only known as Dog A648540. He was dropped at the shelter as a stray dog that had been attacked by another animal. No name. No owner information. Legally, he has to be put on a hold to allow owners the chance to pick him up. No one came. It’s sad; but fast forward to now and this boy has a new name and a new life. Please say hello to Nigel the most recent boy saved by MAIN.

Nigel is a 5 year old, Shih Tzu Mix, weighing 13.64 pounds. Also, his jaw had a horrific break. The shelter doesn’t have the resources to help a boy whose jaw was basically just hanging off (really). Even through his extreme level of pain, he was labeled a “friendly boy.”

MAIN has a foster for Nigel. However, with the severity of his break, our partner vet Dr. Katie Andre with Bethany Animal Hospital has him at her home for now. Dr. Katie did Nigel’s surgery last week but it was an intense and difficult surgery. Being at Dr. Katie’s home, she can monitor Nigel, care for his jaw, and if his jaw releases she can treat him immediately. He also got a nice shave at her home. Unfortunately, Nigel is in a great deal of pain and cries out because of it. Of course, Dr. Katie is managing the pain in the most effective way possible but the jaw is just so bad. Now though, we have to hope that the repair will hold for this boy.

I want to share this update from Cari who is also caring for sweet Nigel. “We had to add a cone since he’s been working so hard to get the muzzle off. He was scratching himself and jarring his jaw. His is NOT a fan. He’s very well behaved, though. When going out to do his business, he runs to the door but immediately sits to wait for you and the door to open, and continues to wait until he’s released. He asks before jumping on the sofas. I do wonder if there were some issues around his food dish because he will attempt to eat heartily but if I come near, he leaves and doesn’t quickly return. He is a stage 5 clinger and wants company at all times. He’s quiet when laying against either of us and cries incessantly if alone. Thankfully, appetite is good and he’s taken a couple of pills now when covered in gravy. Of course, you have to help get it in his mouth since his bottom jaw doesn’t close but he does take them! Very sweet boy.”

As you can imagine, Nigel’s bills have started and will continue for a while with what he has going on. We could really use your help with donations and we’d love for you to share Nigel’s post too.
