Meet Duke! Duke was rescued off the county euthanasia list with a leg injury.

He will be transported to Bethany Animal Hospital where he will have a full vet evaluation and the best course of action for his leg will be determined. As always, we will keep everyone updated on Duke’s journey!

Medical Update, Dec. 3rd: Duke appears to have no fractures, just very extensive soft tissue damage. He is scheduled for his neuter surgery and closure of his wound tomorrow and then he will head to a foster home to recover. He will take some time to heal and as long as there are no complications, we hope he will make a full recovery!

Duke’s Updates:

Duke has been adopted! Congrats to Duke and his new fur-ever family! He has a brindle brother at home too!

Duke & his brotherA note from Duke’s foster mom: He’s playful and loves to run and run. But when it’s time to mellow out he just lays around. The cat thing is relative…he does bark at them, but because he’s young he is and can continue to be worked with on them. Last time we had him around cats he ignored them, but there were a lot of other distractions for him. I wouldn’t expect him to ignore them if we were in a room with no other distractions, yet. He is a goofy puppy, who still trips over his feet all the time. His tail is so long he can “play the drums” with it on his sides, when he’s happy. He swings it so hard it goes from one side to the other and sounds like he’s drumming. And he pokes himself in the eye with it! He is easy to work with, listens well. Tries to please. Very loving, loves to cuddle. Loves to play outside with you, will play fetch and tug of war. Loves treats.

Duke! The thing that really makes him stand out is that he can be very high energy and yet when it’s time to be calm, he can do that and can do that for as long as you need him to. So if he doesn’t get a walk, he’s not climbing the walls, but if you want to walk he’s right there, willing and able to walk as long as you want.

From Duke’s foster mom, Jan. 1st: We took Duke to the dog park tonight. It was closed, but we walked the track and some brushy area. Duke learned pretty quick that a leash meant he should stick with us. He is such a QUICK learner! Guessing from his behavior, he hadn’t had leash work before, or it was a distant memory. He has learned to wait for release before he eats, he’s learned our command for dogs to stay out of the kitchen when we are cooking and he’s pretty much got “go lay down” figured out. We are close to having “leave it” learned too. He’s a happy go lucky guy, that we’ve nicked named “Gumby” (and occasionally “Dork”) which dates any of us who knows who Gumby is… He’s got rubber bones has far as I can tell. We do have some work to do regarding cats, but I’m confident we’ll get through that. He’s going to take some work learning to greet other dogs appropriately. But again I’m confident he’ll learn. He’s smart and willing to learn- just needs some exposure and teaching.

Update, Dec. 21st: Duke left the vet with no bandage on his leg yesterday! He still has a few owies that need to heal, but he’s doing great. He also made it through the entire day yesterday with NO accidents in the house!

Update from Duke’s foster, Dec. 10th: Duke is still doing awesome. He is so happy, he has a “happy tail”, right now. Duke has settled in like he has always been here. He is using his leg well. He does have moments where he holds it up high and doesn’t use it, but those rarely last for long. He loves his toys and he loves to chase a ball and brings it back, really consistently. He has been a lot of fun for us!

DukeUpdate, Dec. 6th: Duke playing with his Kong this morning. He was pretty excited when he discovered food in it! He had a great night. He slept in a crate in our room. He’s had a great morning; been outside in the sunshine, hung out with the kids and dogs. He is currently snoozing away! He does great in the house and in the crate. When we all settled in to work on different projects, he laid down and went to sleep.

Update from Duke’s foster mom, Dec. 5th: Duke traveled great and settled right in. He knew exactly what the couch was for! He got to have his “cone of shame” off for a few minutes, which he enjoyed very much. He’s done great with my dogs and with my kids. He listens way better than I expected for a six month old pup with an unknown background.
