Scruffy

Scruffy is ready to adopt his own family.

Scruffy is a 1½-year-old Terrier mix and weighs 9.7 pounds. He came to M.A.I.N. when he had problems with his back legs and lack of control over peeing and pooping.

Scruffy completed physical therapy and acupuncture treatments as well. Both treatments have helped him. His legs are much better. His bladder and bowel control have improved but aren’t perfect. He still has accidents but does give some warning when he needs to poop.

Scruffy’s personality is wonderful and hilarious. He plays until he’s tired but will settle down when he needs to. He loves toys, especially squeaky ones and does well with other dogs. He’s been staying with M.A.I.N. Alum, Addie, and has done well. Scruffy also enjoys cuddling with his human and being around them. And of course, he is quite a fan of treats.

Scruffy needs some training because, at times, he lacks manners. When it comes to his treats and food, Scruffy is possessive. Also, he has some insecurities. He isn’t sure about all cats. It’s not that he wants to hurt them, but he can’t always figure out how to play with them. So, he sometimes chooses to play by chasing them. He’s also insecure about men and children. Again, not that he’s vicious, he seems to be unsure about them. It’s possible that he’s never been around either. He is truly a wonderful boy.

Scruffy has been neutered, microchipped, licensed with Maricopa County, and is up to date on vaccines.

Scruffy update April 10, 2023.

Scruffy’s doing well. He’s got a lump on his leg (kind of sounds like a country song, right?). The doc put him on antibiotics and that should take care of it. Scruffy has had acupuncture and, as you know, many tests. We still don’t have an answer for his spinal issues, but you all know M.A.I.N., we don’t give up on our kids.

Scruffy continues to lack control over pooping and peeing. His foster mom said that certain times are worse than others. Here’s something to make you go, hmm. His uncontrolled pooping happens more often when he’s being held. Coincidence? Of course, it could be something to do with his nerves, but he is a young boy, so I’m saying he just thinks that’s funny 😉

Please keep sending prayers, juju, sage, vibes, or anything positive to Scruffy and his doctors, with the hope that an answer is found soon.

We’re still in need of help with funds and with sharing his post. The more people we reach, the greater our chance of finding the monies we need for Scruffy and the others we have right now and in the future.

Thank you for your support in all we do and for being part of the M.A.I.N. family.

Welcome to the M.A.I.N. family, Scruffy.

Scruffy is a 1½-year-old Terrier and weighs 9.7 pounds. M.A.I.N. received a plea from the shelter and was told that Scruffy that his medical issues require a neurologic specialist. They also said Scruffy was sweet and loves attention and pets. No lies there. His personality is off the charts, and he’s a mushball.

Scruffy has problems with his back legs. He gets around fairly well, but he hops. He has superficial and deep pain and small bald spots on those legs (maybe from dragging). He has muscle atrophy in the legs and seems to have little or no control over peeing and pooing. All of which is consistent with a spinal injury.

The shelter doesn’t have the resources for animals with severe medical issues. They simply don’t have money. So, Scruffy was within 12 hours of being put to sleep for lack of medical care. When Kelly got the plea, she posted in the M.A.I.N. foster group asking if anyone could foster Scruffy. One of our fosters immediately said, “No way in hell does he get PTS for lack of a foster. Commit to him and me and B—— will figure it out.” And those are the kind of life-saving fosters M.A.I.N. has.

Now for our own plea. We desperately need donations. This boy is 1 of 3 dogs we’ve saved in the last seven days. We don’t turn medical dogs away, but that doesn’t mean we’re flush with funds either. Our vets are patient and give us great discounts, but medical rescue is expensive, and bills add up quickly.
