Meet Sawyer! Sawyer has Mange…thousands of tiny mites burrow through his skin every minute of every day. He cannot sleep, and as you can see, the constant itching has created open wounds all over his body.
We’re transporting this sweet boy to the animal hospital where his new life will begin- treatment for Mange and all the TLC he never had in his previous “home.”
Update December 29th: Sawyer is safe now, and will begin medication to rid his fragile body of the mites that have taken over. In the days ahead, he will head to a wonderful foster home, where he will get the love and attention that has been lacking in this young pup’s life. He’s definitely on his way!
Sawyer’s Updates:
Sawyer’s foster mom has made it official and adopted Sawyer! We are so happy for both of them!
Update, Feb. 28th: Sawyer had his second skin scrape and it came back negative! He is medically cleared which means no more medications and baths. Everyone remembers what he looked like the first day when he came out of the shelter when he was saved. AND he graduated from puppy class last night!
Update, Feb. 18th: Sawyer is a pistol! The only reason why he is sleeping now is because he had a big walk. He wakes up happy and stays that way all day. I have started to let him sleep on the bed with Brody and Romeo only after he has gone potty around 5AM and I feel a “mistake” coming on doing that. He needs to sleep right next to me or on me, quite the snuggle bunny. They have stuffed toys they rip up and play with! His hair is growing back in and the reason you haven’t seen pictures is because he never sits still long enough. All I get is “sleeping angel” pictures. He is a great walker on the leash and has learned to drink out of the water bottle like the other dogs. He has Brody and Dash to play with all day. I guess to sum it up – he is quite the lover and he is loved!
Update, Feb. 7th from Sawyer’s foster mom: Sawyer got neutered today! There is nothing sweeter than a “Mamma’s Dog.” When my dogs are at the vet and they have to go to the back room I always have to go with them, because they will not go with out me…NOT Sawyer. The vet tech took the leash and he pranced along with her, not a care in the world. My only consolation was I heard him howling in the back – of course I thought it was for me. Nope, another dog was in the back and Sawyer wanted to play and wasn’t able to. We will be having a chat when he comes home – probably when he’s still drugged. 😉
From Sawyer’s foster mom, Jan. 17th: Sawyer had his first vet visit with me today. He charmed everyone and took the shot better than I did, just looking at it. He has gained weight and his skin looks great…those are the changes. What hasn’t changed, is his happiness and inability to sit still. He’s quite the wiggle butt!
Update on Sawyer, Jan. 7th: It’s been a week and we have all settled into a routine. Sawyer’s cough is getting better, but now he is like a little kid who sneezes and snot comes out of his nose. Trying to figure out how I can get him to wipe his own nose on Kleenex…thinking that’s not going to happen. He also slept through the night from without me taking him outside in the middle of the night. Still not convinced he is totally house trained, since I take him out but I am pleased with his progress. He is all puppy in that he doesn’t want to miss a thing. I actually have to put him in his “castle” (sounds better than kennel) so he can get some sleep, haha!
From Sawyer’s foster mom, Jan. 3rd: Sawyer Day 3- He went right into his kennel last night without a peep and slept through the night with only one potty in the middle of the night.
He knows how to come in the doggy door and I believe outside also since I see him outside. Still not potty trained but that should only be a few more days, I’m thinking.
Cleaning people and the water delivery guy came and he was great. Quiet and friendly with people he doesn’t know, so there is no fear which is great. Sits for treats although he still gets up on the counters. Comes in for lots of hugs and love.
From Sawyer’s foster mom, Jan. 1st: Besides the fact that he is a mangy mutt and has no manners or skills, he’s perfect. He is so sweet and submissive that he even got Dash, who I was worried about to warm up to him in record time and invite him to play. Brody is still being grouchy but he’ll get over it. The other three pups are perfect with him. I thought since he’s been in a kennel at the shelter he would be fine, but not so much. He cries and doesn’t know how to rest. I think because he must have always been awake at the shelter. He always has one eye open but he is learning how to rest since mine are experts at it. Sawyer was a great way to end 2012 and begin 2013!
