Meet Patrick! Trish was walking the shelter yesterday and noticed a lifeless body in one of the kennels. This poor baby had been hit by a car and left for dead…
A kind police officer picked him up and brought him to the shelter… he was full of ticks and nasty mats. His gums were white (meaning low blood cell count), so we didn’t have much time.
The call was made and everyone was waiting at BAH to see if we could save this little one or at least let him pass over the bridge in someone’s arms and not in a kennel alone…
As dire a situation as it seemed, we knew we had to try something. Patrick was given a life-saving blood transfusion by fellow M.A.I.N. dog, Toby. He has multiple pelvic fractures and a long road ahead of him…but we know he has the best chance possible with all this love and support and wonderful vet care!
Patrick’s Updates:
Patrick has been adopted! Congrats to Patrick and his new fur-ever family. We are so proud of all he overcame!
Update, Nov. 24th: Patrick is becoming kind of a picky eater…hopefully that means he is starting to feel better and trusting that he will get regular meals.
Update, Nov. 14th: Patrick is already getting better at standing and walking a few steps!
Update, Nov. 13th: Patrick had a nice bath yesterday to try and clean him up and get rid of all those mats. His pelvis is fractured in several places and he will be on very restricted activity while it heals. He is still not able to stand for long without falling over but he’s a very thankful little guy. He’s got a long road ahead but we have confidence that he can make a full recovery.
Update, Nov. 11th: Report from this morning that Patrick went poop and pee on his own! That’s a positive sign that all his bodily functions are working on their own; very crucial with this type of injury. He has multiple pelvic fractures and will need crate rest for a few weeks. Patrick made his first venture outside, then laid down in sunny spot on the patio and sort of allowed me to clean him up a little bit, cut out a couple mats and pull a few ticks…he is coming around. He is so tiny but eats like a horse! He is getting more alert and his eyes are starting to clear up some. He still is not really able to walk, but that’s okay as he is supposed to be resting.
