Meet Kona! At just five months old, covered in hundreds of tics and her time up at the County pound, she was scheduled for euthanasia…

Until M.A.I.N. stepped in to give her a second chance at living the life she deserves. All the blood in Kona’s young body was literally being drained out by hundreds of ticks when M.A.I.N. rescued her from euthanasia at our East shelter.  She is SAFE and at Bethany Animal Hospital receiving lifesaving transfusions and treatment for tick fever.

Update Aug. 29th: Our sweet little Kona has to spend one more night in the hospital before she can go to foster. She has a very severe case of Tick Fever; the levels are sky high. She also has a parasite that’s causing diarrhea. On a positive note, she’s negative for Heartworms and Parvo…we’re still waiting on the Valley Fever results.

Kona’s Updates:

Kona has been adopted by her foster family! After nursing this girl back to health over so many months, they just couldn’t bear to part with her.  Congrats to Kona and her fur-ever family…and THANK YOU to her wonderful parents who went through so much to help this girl become the healthy, beautiful dog you see before you today!

Kona's mom and dadUpdate, Nov. 25th: Kona had an appointment at BAH yesterday. She gained five pounds and had her first negative skin scrape for Mange! She is all cleared for spay surgery next Wednesday!

Update Oct. 20th: Kona and her best friend Rico woke me up at 6am and played for 3 hours straight! Then they finally settled down to let me get a nap in. They are so funny together. Kona is doing so much better. In fact, she is now jumping off the couches onto Rico’s head. So I would say she has definitely recovered!

Update Oct. 12th: Kona went on her very first walk today! She did great on the leash and naturally had to check out the fire hydrant. The only hiccup we had was when it was time to go back inside, she decided it was a good time to sit in the driveway and not move so I had to carry her in, lol.

Update Oct. 10th: Kona started Doxycycline today. Her labs are leaning towards Tick Fever rather than Valley Fever but we are still waiting on the titers to confirm. Kona is still very lethargic but she is still eating small amounts and drinking. Hopefully she will start feeling better soon!

KonaUpdate, Sept. 13th: She is doing so much better! She just learned to sit and is becoming more confident and independent everyday. She is probably the sweetest most cuddly dog you have ever met. She loves to sit in laps and curl up close and fall asleep. We are finishing up antibiotics next week and continuing to work on gaining weight!

From Kona’s foster mom, Ricole Sept. 9th: Kona is feeling so much better, she holding down small amounts of food and is exploring the house like she owns it! This is the most energetic we have seen her yet!

Update on Kona, Sept. 7th: Look who’s out of the hospital & back home with her foster mom! Kona is still fighting a Sepsis-like infection and Bronchitis but is much better and resting comfortably in her foster angel’s arms tonight! We can’t thank Dr. Andre & Dr. Miller enough for the wonderful care they provided her while she was so critical these past three days.

  1. You would not see something like that here in germany Ö.Ö The animal shelters here care for the animals and would have freed her from the ticks instead of letting her sit there with them. Also there is no euthanasia here in germany. I hate ticks, how did Kona get that many?Ö.ö

  2. I really wish that were the case here. But, our shelters are SO full with SO many dogs and as with many of the county programs, there are budget restrictions that keep the shelters under staffed and under funded. Thankfully, we get alerted to many of these cases so we can minimize the time these poor dogs suffer. I don’t know if Germany has the same issues as Phoenix, AZ does with overpopulation, but there are just SO MANY DOGS. Thank you for the note…

  3. There is more to removing that many tics than simply pulling them off… That many tics causes many other health concerns which are all being addressed now! Cannot wait to meet Kona and give her the love she deserves, my gf is her new foster mom beginning tomorrow! With how freakin sweet she is she may very well become a permanent family member 🙂

  4. No as far as I know we dont have such a problem and i am happy about that. I hope it will get better someday and that you can save many more dogs

  5. All ticks are removed and Kona is now recovering and getting fully heathy in the bak yard! Such a sweet puppy and her tail never stops wagging!

  6. Bless you and your workers. *hugs* You probably realize the hope you give them, but all the same, bless you.

  7. did that county pound seriously leave all the ticks on her like that? not to mention make her sit in her kennel with diarrhea all over her bed. that's animal abuse. thank you MAIN for all you do along with your vets and foster parents!
