Update – Bear is doing well. His foster mom told us that Bear was so happy to have a bath and you can definitely see his happiness in his new picture. He’s so handsome and has got to feel much better without all that mud and blood caked in his coat.
Bear has improved so much since he came into rescue. His bloodwork did come back positive for Tick Fever so he will be on doxycycline for 30 days to treat that. We opted not to do sedated x-rays this week as he’s doing so well. He will be scheduled for his neuter and a dental in a week or so to address the broken teeth, and we will do x-rays then if warranted. He’s a little lame on one leg but without any palpable fractures we’re hopeful it’s just a soft tissue injury. His balance is much improved indicating whatever head trauma he endured is also improving. Our vet at Bethany Animal Hospital said he’s younger than 5 years old. We don’t have a better ballpark yet but he’s under 2. Just a boy…..

Update. From Bear’s foster mom. I just love this new boy! ❤ He is starting to realize he is in a safe place and can let his guard down. He seems to have an instinct to run and hide from humans and is used to spending a lot of time in a crate. We’re slowly but surely teaching him he can trust us and he actually sat with me for 20 minutes this morning just wanting to be pet and nudging me if I stopped. His left leg is definitely hurt but he still gets around (though we’re limiting his activity) and his mouth is painful from fractured teeth. For now he’s content with pain meds and he’ll go back to our partner vet, Bethany Animal Hospital, on Tuesday for a full work up. As you can see, he desperately needs a bath and grooming but our priority right now is his comfort. It’s going to be a long road but we’re on the right track so far!
Please welcome Bear to the MAIN family. This 5 year old boy found himself in the unfortunate position of being hit by a car, suffering head trauma – including fractured teeth….and ending up at a shelter. 💔
Bear was understandably a little nippy with the techs at the shelter but was much sweeter with the staff at our vet….as long as they weren’t trying to mess with his mouth. He actually let one of the male techs shave and clean up his head wounds without issue.
His hesitation and nervousness seems to be pain related, so we’re letting him chill in his nice, quiet foster home with one of our amazing fosters. He is, of course, being spoiled and has some good food, a soft bed and meds for his pain.
He’ll go back to the vet next week for sedation (probably full body) so that x-rays and bloodwork can be done without pain for Bear. We want to make sure there’s nothing broken anywhere that we’re just not seeing evidence of. We can also get a good look at his mouth at the same time and see what exactly is going on in there.
We see the potential for a very, happy, handsome and sweet boy under there! Tonight he’s settling into his foster home and learning that most people ARE nice. He has an amazingly patient foster family to help him along the way.
