This poor 9 month old Golden Mix pup is emaciated, and with a current temperature of 104 degrees, we’re worried. Blood has been taken and he’s been examined. Now we wait with the rest of you to learn what might be wrong.

This is what we know: He was turned into the East Valley shelter earlier today and the shelter staff called M.A.I.N. right away. Kim alerted the fosters and Joan agreed to the responsibility immediately, jumping in the car to head to the shelter where she met him. “As neglected as he appears, he’s just such a sweet sweet boy.” she wrote, while heading to the Alta Vista Animal Hospital.

We’ll update you as soon as we hear anything. But tonight, he’s safe and loved. If you can help by donating to Jagger’s medical bills, then thank you SO much!

Update September 17th 2017:

From Jagger’s foster, Joan:

For as sick as this poor kid is, it didn’t stop him from letting me know that he does NOT appreciate being crated. Every 2 hours last night he would begin to howl (not to mention for over an hour each time).

Right now he is hanging out with most of the other pups and he is calm as can be. Just hanging out, taking a disco nap and not one peep. Conclusion. He hates being confined.

I don’t know where he lived, but he pees as soon as he hits pavement. Which means the porch and pool deck. Gives me an idea he doesn’t know about grass or some people don’t let their dogs pee on the grass. After he pees he wants to go back inside. I keep him out and then he poops. So maybe not quite house trained? His poop is moving from solid to loose but that is most likely the doxycycline he is on.

Aside from being emaciated, he is actually very clean. Clean, soft fur, his nails weren’t terribly long they just needed a trim so he wasn’t an outside dog. His energy level is where it should be for a dog his age.

He does need training since he counter surfs, does jump but it is a gentle jump, does know sit, not down and pulls on the leash. With his basic training and his personality, he would make a great therapy dog.

I would say – he really loves to be next to his human – he is so calm and quiet, you would never know he was here. He just desperately needs to get well and put some weight on.

Update September 20th 2017:

Jagger – So the blood work results are in. The doctor said besides a couple of liver values that are a little bit high (expected given his physical condition) his bloodwork is unremarkable. He’s negative for heartworm, tick fever, valley fever and his free T4 is within normal limits. Fecal also negative.

Remember he was TF + on the SNAP test. It could be it picked up a different type of ehrlichia so the vet said to continue the Doxy for the full treatment period.

Here is Jagger, exhausted from his morning of chewing a cow’s hoof and just hanging out with the other dogs.

Update September 25th 2017:

From Joan, his foster:

Jagger is crazy sweet. I believe he is maybe 15 – 18 months old tops.

He is still very oral orientated. He loves to chew on cow hooves and soft blankets. He actually dragged a soft blanket from his crate, down the hall to the kitchen. I finally got smart and gave him a large stuffed bear that he just mouthed gently.

He is now sleeping in the same room as the other pups at night and he settles right in to sleep. He still needs to go out around 3AM but so do I.

You know he has the seal of approval when Scarlett uses him as a pillow.

  1. I hope they did x-ray to see if anything inside the intestines as that is what happened with Boomer/Ghost and he was so bad we couldn’t do an emergency surgery to remove it as he was in such bad shape that he would not have survived the surgery

  2. Hi, thank you for your time to write back to me with this wonderful updates. You guys are blessing to those who are voiceless, unwanted, abused. Thank you for your dedication and love. ♡♡♡

  3. We really have no idea until his blood work results come back. So far, his bills have totaled around $400, and that could be the extent of it (fingers crossed) or just the beginning. We’ll keep everyone posted as we learn more.. thanks for asking, David!

So, how did Jagger get so emaciated with no disease to speak of?

We have no idea, but his foster learned that when he was turned into the county shelter, his family also had with them an obese Corgi that they left with. Could it be possible that for the time they had him, they used one bowl and that poor Jagger watched the Corgi decimate his share of the food night after night? We certainly hope that’s not what happened but the idea seems plausible, and I’m sure we’ve all known “that dog” in the past.

In any case, those days are over for this sweet boy now, and with a great diet and comfy home to enjoy, we’re excited to see his transformation. <3
