This cute pup was brought in to East today. He’s estimated to be between four and six months. He weighs 27 lb. He also has a really bad time standing and walking or just maintaining his balance. It might be something neurological but we aren’t sure yet.

When he came in, he was overheated but not too bad so we got him comfortable and cooled down and got him eating. His tail wags nonstop. We don’t know if he’s a distemper survivor or if there is something else neurologically going on but he is adorable and he does not appear to be actively ill.

Update: September 7 at 9:48am

Morning with Brooks. This sweet boy slept on that bed for 8 hours last night.

Reminds all of us here at M.A.I.N. about this lovely saying that we get to witness over and over again.

There’s a deep sleep that only comes on the first night out of the shelter. As he settles in, he gives a great big sigh. Like a weight has been lifted off of his shoulders. Then he sleeps deeper than he ever has. Knowing he’s safe. You get a lump in your throat as you realize how close he came.

Update: 9-12-2017

Brooks’ lab results are in: heartworm neg, tick fever neg, cocci (VF) neg, t4 within normal limits, CBC and chemistry within normal limits.

I’m thinking Brooks isn’t falling as much. He’s definitely FAR from that road of recovery. I don’t know if he’s improving or if he has just continued to figure out how to function with the vertigo.

Update September 20th 2017:

Sweet Brooks made some new friends today, including a three year old and a five year old. He’s such a sweet boy. He loved every minute of it…

Update October 3rd 2017:

As cute as this video of Brooks is, it really showcases his mobility and motor issues. He sees the neurologist this afternoon. X-rays have revealed some lesions on C1 and C2 (cervical spine aka neck area).

He is hilarious and sweet! He spent the weekend with some fun doggie boys who know he is ‘special’ and are extremely tolerant when he falls onto them or trips them up.

We aren’t sure if his issues will be fixable. More testing <read expensive!> may be required. Please donate if you are able. Can’t donate? Shares and prayers are free and most appreciated. Thank you. xoxo

  1. Have you tried the Toe Grips? I used these for about three years when my elder dog began to have trouble getting up from my hardwood floors.

Tip from my vet: Do not use the ointment that comes with them. Instead soak them in rubbing alcohol for a minute or two right before applying.

  2. I have also had great success with puppies with fall issues using baby or kids slippy socks. The ones with the grippers on the bottom. And we used Velcro around the ankles to hold them in place.

  3. This pup looks exactly like one that my daughter was thinking of adopting. He was with a foster ( I can’t remember the rescue organization ) he had the same symptoms and the rescue had him evaluated by a veterinary neurologist. It was determined that he had a condition called Vestibular disease. It is a congenital condition. Extra precautions should be taken with these dogs, as you have stated. I hope this is not the same pup and instead of him being returned to the Rescue foster he was turned into East. He was 3 months old when she had him in her home for a tryout. That was last month. She unfortunately was afraid he would seriously injure himself because they have tile and he was always falling and hitting his head on the tile. He was a sweet, loving, cuddly boy. These dogs adjust well to that condition. I hope you can find a good home for him.

  4. Would like to say that Brooks is an awesome little pup! His condition is manageable and he has a long life ahead of him. I fell in love with him at 1st meeting.

  5. I’ve been using Dr. Buzby’s ToeGrips for Dogs. Josie doesn’t slip anymore!!! If you want to keep him where he is and try them, I will happily donate if the foster will do the measuring on the nails.

  6. I remember the day this handsome baby was brought to me and then he headed off to rescue with MAIN…he left such an impact on me and my daughter. Sweet Brooks we only had you for an hour and you left our hearts full for a lifetime.
