Alfred, Flat Coated Retriever Mix

Alfred waiting for rescueMeet Alfred.

What can we say that these pictures don’t already say for us? We were horrified when we first saw this poor dog with this giant tumor hanging from his neck. How could he walk? How could he eat? Most importantly: how did he get in this horrific condition?

As if the the size of the tumor itself wasn’t bad enough, the tumor had actually ulcerated while Alfred was at the shelter, putting him at risk for infection and bleeding, not to mention the pain this poor dog had to have been in. It goes without saying that Alfred needed our help and fast!

M.A.I.N. has already taken this sweet boy to our partner vet and initial bloodwork has come back normal. We are hoping he will undergo surgery to remove the tumor in the next few days and from there, we can send the tumor off for analysis.

In the meantime, he is being monitored closely and started on pain medicine and antibiotics. Alfred weighed in at 25 pounds with the tumor- we are curious to see what he weighs after it is removed!

As always, we will keep everyone updated on Alfred’s progress and road to healing. Please, if you are able, donate to Alfred’s medical care chip-in fund via PayPal. The dogs only have us and we only have you. Thank You!

 Alfred’s Updates:

Alfred’s has been adopted! Congrats Alfred and your new fur-ever home!

Alfred in fosterFrom Alfred’s foster family, Feb. 1st 2015: Alfie is definitely both a people dog and a dog’s dog. I also proclaim him potty and crate trained! He’s going to make someone very very happy as their new friend. He got his stitches out and micro-chipped; the vet said there is no reason he isn’t adoptable now! He likes to play. He has also gained a little over 2 lbs and now weighs 24.8 lbs without the tumor. The vet guesses him to be approximately four years old. He has a very dignified way about him. If he were a person I would describe him as sweet and shy but willing to engage and very confident in himself.

From Alfred’s foster family, January 2015: Things Alfred wants you to know today…first, he is definitely a people dog. Everytime he sees someone he runs to them, tail wagging. Second, his neck is healing sooo well. Even though the scar still looks bad, the skin is pretty soft and he loves to have his neck rubbed. Third, he has the cutest paws EVER. They have long little tufts of fur between the toes that are super-cute. He walks with the other dogs but doesn’t want to engage with him. My other dog kept giving him her antler nubbin as a play invitation but he just stares at both of them. We will learn more about each other as time passes.
