At just 3-4 months old, Madelyn has already been neglected long enough to find herself at the county shelter with horribly infected eyes.

Her eyes were forced shut with all the drainage and when shelter staff cleaned her up, they noticed her face and chin were swollen as well.

The left eye in particular is very badly infected and Madelyn will need medical care as soon as possible.

M.A.I.N. stepped up to help this sweet pup and we’ve busted her out of the shelter and taken her to our partner vet.

Meet Oliver.

Oliver was abandoned by his owner at the county pound with a possible broken hip. We know what WE would do if our pet was in pain and had a broken bone- and we know what all of YOU would do…

So it’s unfathomable to us to think that someone would surrender this beautiful soul to the shelter, his fate most certainly being death because of his injury.

Luckily, Oliver’s fate took a different turn today when M.A.I.N. stepped in to rescue him, thanks to an outpouring of online networking and support.

Oliver’s Updates:

Oliver has made it to foster and is settling in well so far. He is scheduled for FHO surgery next week. We will keep everyone updated on this sweet pup’s progress!

From Oliver’s foster mom, May 15th: We are slowly getting Oliver settled in….using the crate and giving the bigger dogs a little more time to get used to him. He is a sweetheart and wants to go wherever I do. Poor guy can walk and doesn’t seem to mind, but you can tell something is wrong. When he lays down it seems uncomfortable. Doc gave Oliver some pain medications and we are helping him take it easy. Surgery is scheduled for next week. We will keep you all updated! Did I mention he is FUZZY!

At just four months old, Ramona should be running and playing with a family of her own. Instead, she was abandoned at a local vet’s office with an obviously broken leg. Ramona had no family…and no lifeline.

That is, until M.A.I.N. stepped up to give this sweet young pup a new name and a new life!

Ramona’s Updates:

Ramona has undergone surgery for her broken bone (scroll down for pictures- warning, graphic images). She is doing well so far in foster and settling in with her new humans and doggy siblings. Her treatment was made possible by wonderful donors like YOU and the PACC911 and Lulu’s Angel Fund!

Update from Ramona’s foster family, May 16th: Ramona made it home! She was so quiet for the ride and seemed to smile all the way. She’s just as cute as a button and so very good natured. The cone collar must stay on, which made it a little hard for her to eat and drink so we popped it off for mealtime and back on again. Can’t wait for day two!

At just three months old, this poor pup has already contracted the deadly Parvo virus as well as a horrible case of kennel cough.

The odds are against him, but we’ve never let that stop us in the past.

With M.A.I.N. and all of you on Huck’s side, he has the best chance possible.

He’s currently at our vet’s receiving potentially life saving treatment, but he needs your thoughts and best wishes for tonight.

Huck is doing well so far in his foster home! His foster mom reports he is “like a whole new dog” and is eating, drinking and playing! We will keep everyone posted on his progress.

From Huck’s foster mom, May 10th: Here are a few pictures of little Huck. He’s doing very well: eating, drinking, solid stool, no vomiting. He’s just an absolute love bug. He does get frightened when I leave so we’re working on that. Considering he could barely lift his head when we saw him Monday night at MCACC, he’s made quite the transformation already!

There’s not too much we can say about Maisey…her pictures say it all. She was found as a stray in this horrible condition; her paw deformed, extremely emaciated and without a glimmer of hope in her eyes. We know it’s hard for you to look at these pictures. It’s hard for us too. But if we don’t help her, who will? Soon Maisey’s new life will began; we will be transporting her to our vet in Phoenix for treatment and from there, she will heal in a loving foster home. Maisey’s road will be long and her medical care costly. Notes from county: Approx. 5 months old. Very emaciated but active, front right leg appears deformed. BCS 1/5 ( 3 ideal).  Front right leg is deformed and shrunken. Volunteers report she is very sweet and friendly, but shy.

Maisey’s Updates:

Maisey is currently in a loving foster home, where she is getting tons of attention, warm beds and tasty food! We will keep everyone updated on her test results and progress!

Medical Update on Maisey, May 6th: The vet did x-rays and discovered the leg is a congenital defect and will require amputation once she is well enough for surgery. They also did a ProDog blood panel, so we  should have some preliminary results by Tuesday this week.

Filthy and covered in blood, his broken jaw hung limply as he watched passers-by point and stare at his kennel, wondering “what’s wrong with that dog?” Chai wasn’t adoptable with his medical issues, so M.A.I.N. stepped in to provide him with the medical care he so desperately needs. After stabilization at the vet, Chai had most of his teeth removed while under anesthesia for x-rays. The vets discovered lots of bone loss; the upper canines were so rotten they had created oronasal fistulas (a communication between the oral cavity and the nasal cavity). If Chai develops enough healthy gum tissue on the antibiotics,the vets can try and close the fistulas surgically. For now he’s on pain medications and SAFE in his foster home. Medical Update from the vet, April 27th: Most of Chai’s teeth are gone. The rest were rotten and I removed them today since the infection in this dog’s mouth is horrific. There is very little bone left in this dog’s mouth. I don’t know whether I will be able to fix these fractures, but we’ll start by trying to get the infection under control and go from there. I placed a muzzle on him after removing his teeth today to stabilize things. He was able to eat gruel made from soft food just fine last night and should be able to continue that with the muzzle in place. He’ll leave here with metacam for pain and clindamycin (antibiotic)- both liquids which can be squirted in his mouth even with the muzzle. He should be fed soft dog food mixed with enough water or broth that he can lap it/suck it up more or less efficiently. He may have some bleeding from his nose for a few days as the upper canines were so rotten they had created oronasal fistulas (communication between oral cavity and nasal cavity). If he develops enough healthy gum tissue on the antibiotics I can try and close the fistulas surgically.

Chai’s Updates:

Chai is currently in a loving foster home while we wait to see if his body is able to regenerate enough healthy gum tissue for surgery. We will keep everyone posted on his progress!

From Chai’s foster mom, May 2nd: Chai the Chihuahua is such a good little guy, even while wearing the lovely flotation device which prevents him from further injuring his broken jaw. The vet is not sure at this point if his jaw can be repaired surgically, so this week we’re concentrating on treating his oral infections and hoping for new soft tissue to form. Keeping a muzzle on him is a challenge, he’s pretty wily! I let him enjoy a snack and some sunshine before replacing it.

From Chai’s foster mom, April 29th: Chai is doing great! He has a good appetite, and is so anxious to play with my pack of Chihuahuas. I’ve let him interact with a few of my more mellow Chis and he has done very well. I also have two feral cats I care for and he just ignores them when outside, even when they brush up against him. This little boy doesn’t seem to have an aggressive bone in his body.

From Chai’s foster mom, April 27th: Poor little guy is just exhausted. He scoped out the backyard, ‘tagged’ a few bushes, drank a little water, and is now nodding off in his kennel.

Medical Update, April 18th: Misty had a dislocated hip which Dr. Katie was able to pop back in (not as simple as it sounds – lots of muscle needed on their parts). Fingers crossed that the femur stays where it is supposed to now; they often don’t, especially when trauma to the joint is severe. She needs STRICT cage rest and will go to foster tomorrow.

Misty’s Updates:

Misty is recovering in a loving foster home while she is on strict crate rest. In a week’s time, she will get another xray to determine how her hip is doing. We will keep everyone updated!

Update on Misty, May 12th: Misty had a check up at BAH today. She is building up the muscle in her leg. She is walking on it more, until she gets excited. She had her booster shots today. She is such a mellow sweet girl, who just wants lots of love and attention!

From Misty’s foster mom, April 30th: Misty had a vet appointment yesterday. Her hip is only 50% in place. The vets want to keep an eye on it to see if it will start building calcium around it as it heals, so she may not need to have FHO surgery. They also said to keep doing what I am doing with her, making her use her leg as much as possible to build up the muscle. She doesn’t seem to be in any pain from it being the way it is. She is a happy-go-lucky girl and so sweet!

From Misty’s foster mom, April 22nd: Misty had a vet appointment today. She has another one next week as well to xray her hip. Depending on how she is doing, she be able to start physical therapy at home.
She is now on an antibiotic as she started sneezing and coughing. She seems to never NOT have a smile on her face though!

Medical notes from county: “Right hind food is quite swollen but appears no fractures.  Severe ligature type wounds (probable cause of the swelling) within the dermis around the ventral neck.”

Venicia’s Updates:

Venecia is recovering from her injuries in a loving foster home. The wounds to her legs are wrapped in special honey bandages to promote healing. She is having a great time snuggling and exploring with her foster family! We will keep everyone updated on her progress.

Update on Venicia, May 6th: Miss Venicia (Neci Bear for short) just came home from another bandage change and checkup on her big girl surgery. They are pleased with her progress. Neci certainly doesn’t let ANYTHING slow her down – just ask the exhausted folks in the waiting area!

From Venicia’s foster mom, April 21st: I call her “Neci” for short; she is doing fabulous! Whenever I’m with her, which is 90% of the time, her e-collar is off -she’s so busy exploring and snuggling she doesn’t chew at all! I can tell there is some discomfort as she ocassionally will hold her leg up. Her sisters are another story and intros are purposely going slow. “Neci” would love nothing more than to play with them, because she is a lover like that. We did discover cats are not welcome, however! Miss Neci is taking her meds with no issue and we’re back to the animal hospital for a recheck Monday afternoon. Such a sweet, sweet pile of energy and love!

Harrison’s jaw is broken along with his spirit.  He was scheduled to be euthanized this morning, but M.A.I.N. stepped in and now he’s the newest member of our growing family!

Medical Update on Harrison, April 18th: Harrison can go to foster tomorrow. The vets have determined there is no acute fracture; there is a bony mass on the left side of Harrison’s jaw and they will re-evaluate next week once the radiologist officially reads his xrays. For now, Harrison is not in any pain and is a very bright and happy puppy.

Harrison’s Updates:

Harrison is currently in a wonderful foster home, while the vets determine the best course of action for his injuries. For now, he is enjoying getting to know everyone in his new home and playing like a typical happy puppy! We will keep everyone updated on his diagnosis and progress.

Update on Harrison, April 28th: Harrison is doing fantastic today! He’s acting like a three month old pup, running and jumping and biting the other dogs. So glad he’s feeling MUCH better! His swelling has gone down a bunch too. I think he’s on the road to recovery! He’s such a love bug and very entertaining! Will keep you all updated…

Update on Harrison, April 27th from his foster mom: Harrison went to the vet yesterday due to the side of his face getting bigger. He reminded me of a hamster I once had that stored all his food in his cheeks. Dr. Katie is stumped- she doesn’t think it is associated with the jaw fracture and we  ran blood tests and cultures. Pending the results, we can treat it better. For now, he’s on antibiotics and pain medications. He was really not feeling good last night at all- he was lathargic and in a lot of pain, but this morning he’s running around again. I think what ever it is started draining since there was a little blood on his bed where he sleeps and an odor. His future mom comes over almost everyday and loves on him; he is going to be one spoiled little boy, but he deserves it! I’m so glad she loves him because I’m not sure if I could let him go!

From Harrison’s foster mom, April 20th: It looks like Harrison may have had a prior broken jaw from a dog bite; the x rays will be read by a radiologist, then the vets will determine the best treatment. For now, he’s in no pain and eats normally. We should know something next week. Our pack has accepted the ‘lil guy, no problem! M. A.I.N. alumni, Eli (and our adopted dog) can’t wait to play with him- Eli is doing GREAT with him so far!

So Laverne is the latest member of the MAIN Family.  Please welcome her and help her if you’re able to.

Laverne’s Updates:

Laverne is currently in a wonderful foster home while we try to diagnose her medical issue. We are ruling out Mange, allergies and/or endocrine issues and will keep everyone updated on her progress. For now, she is loving life in her foster home, meeting her new friends!

Medical update on Laverne, April 20th: Laverne’s blood tests are looking good, so the next guess is severe allergies. She is not ready to be tested yet, but would need to go to a dermatologist for that. Her skin looks way better, is more flexible and not sticky anymore. So, she has three “hot spots” for her itching – her paws, her ears and her bottom.

From Laverne’s foster mom, April 15th: Laverne is a sunbather! She is settling in nicely and has stopped following me all the time. She is free in the house like she’s lived here ages. My dogs seem to see it the same way! If I’m looking for her, I know where to find her…lying in the sun!

From Laverne’s foster mom, April 12th: Laverne had an itchy night and an itchy morning, but just calmed down and fell asleep by my feet. Her skin still smells a lot. It feels like I would imagine the skin of an elephant. I´m surprised that it not bloody after all the scratching. I can touch her and I take a towel and scrub her, she seems to like it. But she is very sensitive with mild contact such like a fly. She walks with us without problems for about 20 min. She is extremely food motivated. She is warming up with the big ones, but still thinks, I’m hers…. (we will work on that!).

She was a super sweet girl; a little shy, but she warmed right up once you held her. We LOVE the beautiful color of her eyes and the eye contact she makes with the camera!
